William Ponting Collins

Hello Everyone

I am looking for any clues as to the birth of a William Ponting Collins born about 1839 - possibly in York but sometimes described as Yorkshire, NK. His father was John Ponting Collins and William had a brother, James Ponting Collins who married Frances Emma Tubbs in 1856 in St Pancras, Middlesex. William Ponting Collins married Mary Ann Hibberd in 1863 in London - his marriage cert described his father as a soldier whereas James' gave John's name but said 'Dead' under Rank or Profession of Father. Ponting definitely seems to be an additional first name as it is given to William's children and also his wife but not as a surname.

Any additional help would be greatly appreciated as I am well and truly stuck!

Was brother James older or younger - have you got a birth for him?

Unfortunately not - nothing :( The marriage cert just says 'Full Age'.

So he was probably older than William.

Have you found James & Frances on any census to see his birthplace? 
I haven't found them in 1861  :(

Looking at James marriage, one of the witnesses is Ann Maria ? Collins, and I see that an Ann Maria Ponting Collins aged 31 married George Pace in Portsea, Hampshire on 24 Nov 1860, so she is quite probably a sister.

A possibility for this couple in 1871 is
George Pace  47  Head  born Malta Royal Naval Messman   
Anna Maria Pace 40 Wife b Dublin

Ann Pace 31 born Dublin
George Collins, Nephew, 8 born Bristol
Mary Ann Pace, Niece, 16, born Corfu

Ann Maria Collins baptised 20 Dec 1829 St Michael and John's, Dublin city, Dublin, Parents John Collins & Margaret Shea.

William Collins baptised 5 May 1839 Doncaster, St George, s/o John Collins & Margaret Collins formerly Shea. John a Sergeant in the 53rd Regiment. Address given as St Sepulchre Gate

Glad its of help, although I still cant find James baptism and I've no idea where Ponting comes in!
