As John Davis was serving in France in 1915 you might get more info if you can find his service record

There was also a John Blanche born Francis Street 24th Feb 1889 to John Blanche and Johanna Quinn
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1889/02482/1921400.pdf

i can find no records for him other than his birth.

Re John Davis there are a few by that name on the 1911 English census born Ireland in their 20s lncluding one from Waterford City
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01iqo/

it is also strange that he calls himself an Engineer on his marriage cert while on William's birth he is a Railway Porter.

That's interesting nowel.

I had always assumed that John Davis was born in Ireland (prob Waterford) as that was where he married Johanna and the first two of his children were born.
