looks like I'll have to check the Register of Sasines - bother!

If you don't have access to the Registers of Sasines online indexes [Registers Direct], I can check on Monday for you. I have pm'ed you.

Now, Jen, why does that not suprise me  ;D

Guess the 1881 census is the main one for possible clues if you ever get better info. The Lodging House, if it can identified, might help more. Also, Diana, looks to have been the village grocer that year doesn't she. Maybe shop and house the same?

81 - St Cyrus - first house on the page described as 'Village Woodside Croft' then her house just 'Village' then next house 'Village lodging house'
So can we assume that her house in 1881 was actually between Woodstone Croft & the Lodging House?

ADDED: Looks like we need to identify 'Kirktown' in St Cyrus.

Looks like we need to identify 'Kirktown' in St Cyrus.
That shouldn't be difficult - the Kirktown is always the cluster of houses around the kirk.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Off topic for a sec. Hadn't noticed this so much before on other maps...St Cyrus certainly had an awful lot of wells!

Josey has very kindly provided me with indexes from the Registers Direct - I am currently looking through those alongside the census returns, the Ordnance Survey Name book for St Cyrus at Scotland's Places and maps of the area...So far I've got Diana leasing 20 poles of land, her grandson Robert Jolly buying Anchorage Cottage in St Cyrus at a much later date and some McBe/ay's owning property including a cottage called Elsinore...it feels like I'm going round in circles to be honest.

Anchorage Cottage MAY be the same property as the  lease - the lease may have been feudalised (note it is the same search sheet number). I know the areas are different [19 poles 6 yd as opposed to 20 poles] but sometimes a slightly different ground area was feued - sometimes to allow for a wider road than when the lease was granted - or it may have been remeasured.

Only one way to find out  ;D ;D
