Mary Ann Costello 1861-1881
« on: Friday 28 October 16 11:06 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find the birth record of Mary Ann Costello (1861 – 1881). Her parents Patrick Costello (a serving soldier in the 88th Foot) and Ann Broderick were married on 23rd July 1860 in Colchester, the pair are recorded in the 1861 census living in married quarters at Colchester Infantry Barracks and then there is record for the birth of a second daughter (Margaret) during Q2 1862 in Colchester but seemingly nothing for Mary Ann.
The only record we have for her birth is in the 1871 census where the family are recorded living in Preston with 9-year-old Mary Ann recorded as being born at “Fort Suffolk” which I believe could possibly be the Landguard Fort at Felixstowe but I am not sure.
Any suggestions regarding her birth date would be most appreciated - GedB

Do you not think that Margaret and Mary Ann are one and the same child?

Do you have the family on later censuses?

Hiya, I did go down that line but Mary Ann & Margaret are both named on the 1871 census, I now have a copy of the death certificate for Mary Ann (she died just before the 1881 census) and there are good records after that for Margaret so probably not.

Is it possible she was baptised in Suffolk if you think she born in Felixstowe?

Hiya nannyj, baptism or birth in Suffolk is a possibility as I believe it is just across the county border but with her parents shown living in Colchester Barracks married quarters for the 1861 census and playing with other dates I think she must have been born just after the census was taken Colchester has been my main search area plus both parents are down as RC and I am not sure if those records are available. Ah no. They wouldn't be available online as RC would be non conformist. I thought it might be Catholic with a name like Patrick!
