Vicars in Clevedon 1700s
« on: Friday 28 October 16 12:20 BST (UK) »
Hello

Can anyone advise where I can find online a list of the names of the vicars for St Andrew's Church, Clevedon during the 1700s?

Many thanks

Thank you very much for the link.

I've had a look and the vicar I'm looking for doesn't come up under Clevedon so I did a wider search.  His name is Drax Durbin and is shown as a rector in Walton-in-Gordano (close to Clevedon) 1810-1824 until his death.

It's quite random query as I was searching for the parish marriage record of my 4 x great grandfather, Samuel Durbin Hollyman in 1790 Clevedon.  He was illegitimate and it's always been assumed 'Durbin' was his father's name.  (A lot I believe has been written about this.)

Samuel was married by a curate Henry Bevan in Dec 1790 but I happened to notice the marriage above in August was for Thomas Hollyman to Hannah Wall and the minister was 'Drax Durbin'!  This made me curious about Drax and the possibility of a member of his family being Samuel's father.

It's all very strange and I would love to know more!

Thank you - there are a lot of them and many with the same name, so a lot to unravel.

The Durbin name connection to Hollyman may always be a mystery but I'll keep looking.  Any ideas will be gratefully received!

There may not be a direct connection?

I have people in my tree whose middle name is the maiden name of their (maternal) grandmother!

Yes that's true.  However as he was illegitimate it makes it more open ended.

His mother was Mary Hollyman (who later married Joseph Griffin).  Mary's parents were Hezikiah Hollyman and Ann Vowles and I can't find a connection with the Durbin name further back other than there were Durbins in the area - one a 'Sir'!

Yes, I discovered it a while ago.  From other people's extensive research into the Hollyman family (mainly by a man called Fred Cooper which is available online) there's an implication it was incorrectly recorded as a burial when it should have been a baptism, as Samuel Durbin Hollyman appears later in 1790 marrying Ann Wall. (My 4 x great grandparents.)

There is no trace of him before this anywhere other than this 'burial' record so it's all very odd and a mystery.
