« on: Friday 28 October 16 19:50 BST (UK) »
I am trying too find information from the censuses on the cottages on union street  Faringdon.
Can anyone advise another way other than the census as they just seem too have the workhouse details but no numbers for the other houses on the road. what am I missing?

House numbers may not have been in use?

Country towns didn't need house numbers, as the postmen knew most people?!

Not sure if this is what you want, but  in 1891 Union Street is in enumeration district 2 of Great Farringdon*. If you are using Ancestry, go to the 1891 census for England page and from the 'browse individual records' link select Berkshire>Great Farringdon>District 2.  The first page of this tells you which streets are included.  Union Street starts on page 7.  However, house numbers are not given.

*I'm not sure why Ancestry spell it this way. The census pages say 'Faringdon'

Might be because it is spelt with double r in so many other places.

Thank you for your help, luckily for me the rest of the family lived in towns.

It seems common for individual rural properties not to be identified. My gg grandparents lived at The Green, Panfield in Essex. Not only can't I identify the property but I am not sure where in the parish "The Green" was as there is no obvious village green. (I eventually worked out the location, mostly new houses now).

House numbers may not have been in use?

Country towns didn't need house numbers, as the postmen knew most people?!
What evidence have you got to support that wild guess?

Why do you need evidence  :-\
Any one of us would surely have assumed that the person who delivered or distributed the post would know the local villagers.

What evidence do you have to the contrary   ???

Houses, farms, and cottages dotted in the countryside  still today have names and not numbers.
