Dobie family Lockerbie/Dryfesdale
« on: Sunday 30 October 16 15:45 GMT (UK) »
Is anyone researching the Dobie family of the Dryfesdale area?

I am trying to tie up Thomas 1756, George 1759, James 1760, Janet 1761, Joseph 1771 Agnes 1776
They are possibly the issue of Thomas Dobie and Ewphan Shaw who married 10 February 1751 (Ewphan daughter of David Shaw).

Who was Thomas?

There was a Thomas born/baptised 1737 Oddwalls Farm Lockerbie, but he would have been too young to have married in 1751.

James apparently went to Canada.

Janet had a natural son John to Andrew Porteous, St Mungo 1778

This John is the child I am trying to find.

Any input on this family will be welcome.

I have a Dobie puzzle of my own and he may possibly link to yours, but as yet, I am unsure.

David Dobie is noted as being born about 1835 in St Mungo, Dumfries.  On the 1851 census, he is recorded as being the son of Daniel Kirk and Margaret Telfer.  However, there is a birth record (Scotland, Select Births & Baptisms) of a David Dobie, born in St. Mungo, Dumfries, on 5 December, 1834, to Thomas Dobie and Janet Wilson.  Thomas was born in 1793, according to familysearch, which could mean that 'my' Thomas could be his son.  Because of the reference to St Mungo, I feel certain that these 2 families link up somewhere.  As you posted this back in October last year, I wondered whether you had got any further?

Hi Lidiaann,
Sorry, no I haven't progressed with the Dobie family at all.

I am going on holiday on Monday for eight weeks so do not have time just yet to restart my search.

I will diarise it to start looking again in June when I return.

Thanks for your mail.

Regards  Ceeoh

Okay - I'll have a nibble around the edges of this one occasionally and if I come up with anything, I'll do a PM to you.

Have a great time on your break!
