John Henry Bell and Henry Charles Bell, from England, settled in Quebec
« on: Monday 31 October 16 01:41 GMT (UK) »
John Henry Bell (b. England 12/25/1832, d. 11/28/1920 Quebec) is my great-great grandfather. He emigrated either to the US or to Canada but I cannot find records. He married Harriet Elizabeth Bates (b. 1834, also England?) in Stewartstown, NH in 1857. He fought in the US Civil War, but seems to have lived primarily in Quebec (and permanently, after the war). I would be glad to find information about either John Henry Bell or his wife Harriet Bates- where in England they came from, and who their families were.

I have one source which claims (with no evidence) that Harriet Bates' mother was named Margaret Cairns. Otherwise I have nothing other than her birth and death dates (1/14/1834 - 2/29/1904)

Regarding John Henry Bell, I believe he had a brother named Henry Charles Bell (sometimes given as Charles Henry Bell, or H.C. Bell), b. ca. 1829, who also lived in Quebec after emigrating from England (although he got married in and lived for a time in Massachusetts first). Helpfully, Henry Charles listed his parents as John and Hannah Bell on a census. That is all the information I have regarding their parentage. I don't have a death date for Henry Charles Bell, nor can I find a grave for him.

Hello,

After a long while searching I may have found a marriage for Charles Henry Bell to Jane Louisa Amanuell in Massachusetts. Father John Bell, Mother Hannah. As I don't live in America, I can't see the date of marriage etc. You may already have this information, but it seems to be the only one I can find on the family. I will now have a look for census records in England for the Bell's.

Beth

edit - I have found the record on familysearch, and they were married 24 Apr 1850 in Dorchester, Mass. Do you know when the brothers moved to America and if their parents moved with them? At least now we know they moved prior to 1850, maybe quite some years before.

As you have the exact death dates for John and Harriett perhaps you should try for their death certificates from the Quebec Archives. (I don't know how to do this! But someone here probably will if you post on the Canada board)
At that time they may have the parents listed.
Both of them are buried in the Westbury Cemetary, Estrie Region, Quebec.

The Charles Henry b.1829 who married Lane Louisa Amanuell married 24/4/1850 BUT although confirms his parents as a John and Hannah it states he was born in Canada (and 1850 census confirms this too).

So doesn't seem to be the brother of John Henry born 3 years later in England.

Annette

Added: Although what I say above is correct per marriage certificate and 1850 census in 1861 census as H.C. Bell (if same person) he is married to a Jane L. Bell (which fits with above marriage plus states she was born US as she was).

So the marriage I found was correct. However, Annette wrote that that Charles Henry was born in Canada. Maybe this is true. Are you sure they were from England? I was wondering why I couldn't find any birth records...
