Finding George BATCHELDOR on 1841 census Is Proving Difficult.
« on: Wednesday 02 November 16 01:38 GMT (UK) »
George Batcheldor born c1802 Clewer Berkshire married Maria Charlton 1829 Islington London.
On 1851 census they are living in Winkfield Berkshire occ. Victualler with sons aged 5 & 3.
Have had no luck finding him on the 1841 census so far. Married 16 years before first child is a bit unusual, but could be correct, have two more likely children for them who would appear on the 1841 census if only it could be found.
Your help to track this family down would be much appreciated
Cheers

Hi, Heather,

I note that Maria came from Hollingbourne, Kent, and that the head of the family living next to them in the 1851 census was a coachman. Perhaps George went from a coachman to a victualler? Anyway, could this be them in 1841?

At 1 Widmore Lane, Bromley, Kent (looks like a tenement - a few families at each number)
George Batchelor 40 Coachman
Mary Batchelor 35
Charles 10
George 8
James 5
John 3
Henry 9 months

Cheers,
Peter

1841 census Sunningfield Berks
George Batchelder age 10
He is living with a William and Lucy --oun-s, too faded to read, I noticed the son Thomas was also born in Sunningfield re 1851, so could this George be one of their sons?

Re my post above, Heather.
Looks more like the family of George and Mary Ann Forrest marrying in Surrey in 1827. (There is a George junior who looks like yours, christened 5 December, 1830, Bislington (Bilsington?), Kent to George Batcheldor and Maria.)
Sorry,
Peter

Findmypast Newspapers
The Reading Mercury 9 February 1856 Mr. George Batcheldor of the Crispin Inn in Winkfield died on the 31st ult. (January) age 53.
Windsor and Eton Press 26 April 1856. License for the Crispin Inn transferred to the widow requested by representatives for the widow.

I don't have a subscription at the moment, the full articles may give further information especially who was asking for the license to be transferred.

Checked on ancestry, the Winkfield with Ascot area they have indexed for 1841 census begins with Jones through z.
All families beginning with A through Jom-- are excluded. Ancestry does not say there are lost documents for Berkshire 1841.
Try Berkshire Family History Society maybe they can help. I think this is why you cannot find them.

He wasn't at the Crispin Inn in 1841. Thomas Webb was the publican at the time of the census.

A George and Maria Batchelor appear in the same household as servants in Belgrave square in 1841. Neither born in county (Middx). Ages about right allowing for rounding. Could be a coincidence

Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley

FindMyPast has a civil service evidence of age for a George Batcheldor b in Bilsington Kent on 4 Nov 1830 sworn at Winkfield on 19 sept 1863 by his mother Maria Brian formerly wife of late George Batcheldor. So it looks like the Kent born George is their son.

2nd page of declaration says George jnr bapt Dec 5 1830 in Bilsington and parents were George and Maria of Sunninghill servant
