Aberdeenshire Tartan
« on: Wednesday 02 November 16 16:37 GMT (UK) »
Hello I have a question on the tartans people wear who are from families in the Buchan area.

I know about the false public perception of the origin of tartan and the commercialised aspect, however if you are from a Scottish family in the area, what tartan would people wear?

My closest Scottish ancestor was from the Shand family of Cruden. However I also descend from the  Brown family of Fraserburgh, the Laurenson\Lawrence family of Cruden, the Freeland family of Cruden and the Reid family of Strichen.

I do know from past research that tartan was not really prevalent in these areas so there are not really clan tartans but what do people wear in the region I wonder?

I have seen that in 2014 Aberdeeenshire Council commissioned an Aberdeenshire tartan and so I thought this would be the one to wear. A video about it is below:

http://makeitbritish.co.uk/fabric-and-yarn/story-aberdeenshire-created-tartan/

However the manufacturer has told me it is probably too thin to be made into a kilt and this would need to be discussed with a kiltmaker to see if they could line it first.

So I am still rather left with tartanless prospects!

Can anyone please help me out with this?

Thanks,
Jon

Have a look at the Register of Tartans

https://www.tartanregister.gov.uk

entering aberdeen into the keyword section and nothing else gave quite a few to choose from
https://www.tartanregister.gov.uk/Results.aspx?search=548578&page=1

Failing that, find one you like and pick that.

Unless they have some connection to the name of a clan or family whose tartan they like, they would just pick one they happen to like.

There is no tartan police, and no-one is going to turn a hair or bother themselves in the least what you wear.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
