Where is the hamlet of M G N J?
« on: Thursday 03 November 16 16:04 GMT (UK) »
Hello

Could anyone enlighten me please.
I have a marriage of my ancestors at St Dunstan and All Saints, Stepney on 17 June 1787 and there is the following given as the hamlet of what looks like -  M. G. N. J.

I know MEOT is Mile End Old Town so I presume it is along the same lines.

Thank you
Wendy47

There are several marriages that day at Stepney where the place does look like M.G.N.J, but if you look at some of the names on the top of other marriage entries on the same double page, such as an E for Elizabeth Flanders on the 19th, it does look a bit like a G but obviously isn't compared to her signature, and a T for Thomas Symonds on the 23rd, it could be a J but obviously isn't when compared to his signature, so I agree it will be M.E.N.T. as in Mile End New Town.

From parish of Stepney (entry above Mile End Old Town):

Mile End New Town - Hamlet adjacent to Spitalfields and Whitechapel. Was detached from the remainder of the parish of Stepney in 1743 by the separation of Bethnal Green.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

Hello Everyone

A thank you to each of you for your replies. It seems I was on the right lines but didn't think of New Town. I should have realised as it was Stepney.  ::)
