Hmm not so sure, 'Hu' is different, though the D is very close and the 'nter' not a stretch either.

Odd he would sign as WD and call himself Wm on the marriage tho, especially as he had a younger brother named Wm.  ???

How can I get hold of the documents please?

Incidentally David's younger brother Wm (b. 1856 London) was in the Royal Navy c1881.

David's son David Henry HUNTER b. 1877 - my gt grandfather - was a Stoker with the Royal Navy 1906-1911. (His enlistment gives his birthplace as Margate, Kent and his birth date as 3 September 1878, 6' 1, with brown hair and blue eyes and had the initials 'DHH' with crossed hands tattooed on his right forearm.)

Davids army file is on FindMyPast.

I think this could be brother William's Royal Marines record at the National Archives http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D7761167

I see there was a sister Ann Jane born 28 November 1861 who was baptised at the same time as William.

Yes that is William. In 1881 he is aboard 'Lily'.  Still unmarried in 1891 (Brompton) but can't trace him after that.

Do tell me more about Ann Jane please - this is news to me. I have this as Wm's baptism (tho he was actually born in 1856) - but can't see a birth reg for an Ann HUNTER with mmn LAVERY (or similar).

William Warham Hunter
Record Type: Baptism
Estimated Birth Date: abt 1862
Baptism Date: 15 Jun 1862
Father's Name: Hugh Hunter
Mother's Name: Ann Hunter
Parish or Poor Law Union: Charterhouse St Thomas
Borough: Islington
Register Type: Parish Register
Father's occupation: cabinetmaker

The first two entries on the baptism register page of St Thomas Charterhouse for 15 June 1862 show:

Ann Jane Hunter born 28 November 1861
William Warham Hunter  born 25 June 1856

The address for both is the same: 4 Shrewsbury Ct

The occupation for both is the same: cabinet maker

The only difference is that Ann Jane's parents are listed as Hugh & Jane, while William's parents are listed as Hugh & Ann.  I assume that one of those is an error.

Curiouser and curiouser.

There are 2 Ann Jane HUNTERs born in this timeframe in London/Mdsx but neither fit with Nov 1861.

One born Poplar district Sep qtr 1860, mmn "...THER"
The other born Shoreditch district Jun qtr 1862, mmn HENDERSON.

(GRO now shows mmn for early births - very handy!)

No other Ann[e]s seem to fit either.

I'm stumped!

Ah here's something:

Hugh Hunter 25 bachelor, pensioner,  married Jane King, 23, widow,  in Shoreditch in May 1860. His father was Hugh Hunter, cabinet maker. Her father Joseph Henderson, cutler.

So was this Hugh an elder brother of David? And Ann Jane a niece?

So just found Hugh HUNTER, 44, born Ireland, in the 1861 Census in Wakefield Place, St Luke, with Jane HUNTER, 40, born Yorkshire, and (step)children Sarah KING, 11, and George KING, 10! Both children born St Luke, Middlesex  :)

He is shown as 'Chelsea Pensioner'. Was he in the forces too?

The ages you have posted for the marriage don't match the census tho? She can't have been 23 when she married in 1860 with children aged 9 and 10?

What the heck is going on with this lot...??

EDIT: So her age isn't right on the marriage but his was - what a cougar :)
1871 Census for Shoreditch London has Hugh HUNTER b. County Down Ireland, 33, hawker, wife Jane HUNTER, 51, born Sheffield, Yks and stepson George KING, 20, born St Luke's.

Their ages are all over the place.

There's an 1834 Shoreditch marriage for a Jane Henderson and Joseph King. One of the witnesses was Joseph Henderson.  Seems a bit early.

I've just found this old thread re David's sister Mary Ann:
