S.H.W Durnford
« on: Monday 07 November 16 11:33 GMT (UK) »
Is anyone able to check for the birth/christening, or marriage of the above person in the Shaftesbury area of Dorset between about 1700 and 1785?

All I know about him is that he was one of the witnesses to the marriage of my ancestors Rev. Narcissus Ryall and Frances Durnford. Narcissus and Frances were married in Shaftesbury on 4 Sept 1783. I suspect S.H.W Durnford is related to Frances but so far I have not been able to identify who he is.

Any help or ideas would be welcomed.

Thanks,
Matt

I think the signature is SAM. Durnford.  Short for Samuel. Presumably Frances' elder brother Samuel Durnford.

Not sure about that. The rector named on that register page, Richard Templeman, was rector of St James in Shaftesbury.

The image of St. James, Poole register (number 126) shows they were married by Harry Place, curate.

Yes I know but all the other marriages on that page and the facing page were conducted by Richard Templeman

It's a bit of a puzzle, clearly listed as St. James, Poole but I wonder if it has been indexed incorrectly.  :-\

All the other sources I can find place the marriage at St James', Shaftesbury, so I think that particular one may be incorrectly labelled.

That witness signature is almost identical to that on a 1794 Apprenticeship Indenture to Samuel Durnford of Poole. I can't post the signature images here because this is a lookup board and doesn't have the necessary functionality.
