Help with meaning of writing on 1939 Register
« on: Monday 07 November 16 16:17 GMT (UK) »
I have an Elizabeth Rees born 29 Jan 1885 Living at Thatch Cottage at RD of Dorking & Horley.

There is some green writing next to her name and I was wondering if anyone knew what it meant.

Thank you

Can't see it that clearly but could it be that they added an initial after Elizabeth and some of the other writing is the date it was changed and possibly the 'code' or 'source code' for the amendment  :-\

Most of the additional writing I have seen is for women who (after the original index was compiled) married, remarried as a widow or divorced woman. The dates given seem to reflect the date of the amendment, not the new marriage date. Occasionally I have seen a change of birthdate, or some minor correction. I read 12 02 58 or 53 or something similar but probably not the date she died as per Carol but the date the document was amended which should be fairly close to the date of the death if indeed it does refer to the death.

Thank you for the replies.

The initial after the Elizabeth  is a J in the same green as the numbers on the right and I wondered if it was because of that. But think the date etc is some sort of code for something ???

I am sure there must be a list of codes and what they mean.

Thank you

The writing on the left would relate to the addition of the initial, did she have a middle name.

Codes normally have letters that relate to the area in which the amendment was done, are the last two MX (Middlesex maybe). To my knowledge there is no listing of these codes available, they probably just relate to a page in a register where more information on the amendment was recorded and the date it was amended.

Thank you for your reply Rosie.

Yes she had a middle name Jennet (Think this is the Welsh spelling)

Interesting that you say that the letters are usually the area where the amendment is done.
One letter is effeminately an X and the other looks more like an M than say an S for Sussex or E for Essex.

I am unable to find a death certificate for her as there are so many Elizabeth Rees's and she left the family so no one knows where she died. But this may be a pointer.

Thank you
