Illegitimate Anne O'Brien born Westmeath 1872
« on: Monday 07 November 16 17:02 GMT (UK) »
Hello!  I am hoping some of you knowledgeable people can help me.

So, my 2nd GGrandmother is Anne O'Brien.  I have this listing from Catholic Parish Registers, The National Library of Ireland; Dublin, Ireland; Microfilm Number: Microfilm 09487 / 11

Name   Anne O'Brien
Baptism Age   0
Event Type   Baptism
Birth Date   1872
Baptism Date   Jan 1872
Baptism Place   Mullingar, Westmeath, Ireland
Parish Variants   Gaynstown, Mullingar, Walshestown and Gaynstown, Walshestown
Diocese   Meath
Household Members
Name   Age
Anne O'Brien
Ellen O'Brien

I have her marrying a William George Smith in 1889

Name:   Anne O'Brien
Date of Registration:   Oct-Nov-Dec, 1889
Registration district:   Athlone, Ireland
Volume:   3
Page Number:   1
FHL Film Number:   101256

Name:   William George Smith
Date of Registration:   Oct-Nov-Dec, 1889
Registration district:   Athlone, Ireland
Volume:   3
Page Number:   1
FHL Film Number:   101256

In the 1911 census, by which time the couple were living in Hungerford, Berkshire, her place of birth is listed as Tipperary.

I am having a real struggle trying to find out any further information about Anne or her mother Ellen, and I am new to the Irish side of family history!

As Anne was illegitimate would she have been born in a mother and baby home?  I don't see any point in ordering a birth certificate as no father was listed at baptism, so I can't imagine there would be one on the birth certificate.

How can I find out more about Anne's mother with just the basics of her name Ellen O'Brien and the fact the latest she could have been born (with Anne being born 1872) would have been around 1855ish?

Any advice would be extremely gratefully received!

Julie

Thank you for that info.  It is much appreciated.

I have just been on this site and found the marriage cert as described above, and the register of Anne's birth, no father listed.  The informant was a Rick English, Chief resident officer (I think) Workhouse Mullingar.

Ellen was born Tipperary in 1911 Census right?
Did Ellen ever marry?
You would have to wonder how she ended up in Westmeath if she was from Tipperary. Wonder if her family moved, might be worth a search of O'Brien's from Tipperary in Westmeath in 1901.

I have no information on Ellen.  In the 1911 census Anne states she was born in Tipperary, but in all other documents birthplace is Mullingar Westmeath.  Not sure why it would be different?

That's a bit odd, so Ellen is more that likely from Westmeath as well.
There isn't much to go on.
Anne wasn't in Ireland in 1901 was she? I don't see her straight off at any rate.

I was hoped there might be more of a clue in the image of the baptism, but it just says Workhouse, doubt the sponsors are related although no harm in noting their names.
