Thomas Marsh and Mary
« on: Tuesday 08 November 16 19:17 GMT (UK) »
Hi all

I've been having a nightmare trying to find a marriage for Thomas Marsh (1776) and Mary (1786). Thomas is from an unknown parish in London and Mary is from Charmouth. I can't find a record of marriage and there are lots of Mary's born in Charmouth around 1786. They both move to Wellington, Somerset at some point before 1811 and have four children. Any tips on where I should be looking?

What are the names of their children and were they all born in Somerset?

Is this the correct Marsh family on 1851 census
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGGR-PBQ
Their daughter is named Ann

Might this be a possibility for Ann's mother Mary Marsh born c1787 Charmouth,

Mary BOWDIDGE Baptism 14 Oct 1787 Charmouth Dorset
Parents' name(s)   Daughter of Ann
although I'm not seeing a marriage to a Thomas Marsh  ???

Thanks for your reply. Yes that's them. There are no records of Baptism for their children either, which makes me think they may be non-conformist? Mary Bowdidge seems a good possibility!

Hi SamuelF992,

A word of caution;
We do not know if Mary was the Mother of Thomas Marshs 4 Children if no Baptisms have been found.

Mary may be a second Wife for Thomas.

From 1851 Census Sarah TOZER,Wife Richard is in the Household.
She was nee Marsh born c 1820

Marriage of Sarah/Stephen has her Father as Thomas a Saddler (FreeREG)

For those trying to help;
1841;
Thomas Marsh, 65, Saddler
Mary Marsh, 55
Elizabeth Marsh, 25
William Marsh, 8

I'm not having much luck with a marriage at the moment  ???

From 1851 Census Sarah TOZER,Wife Richard is in the Household.
She was nee Marsh born c 1820

Marriage of Sarah has her Father as Thomas a Saddler (FreeREG)

For those trying to help;
1841;
Thomas Marsh, 65, Saddler
Mary Marsh, 55
Elizabeth Marsh, 25
William Marsh, 8
Richard Tozer, 25
Sarah Tozer, 20
Stephen Tozer, 9 Mo
John Morrish, 30

Not that this helps with finding a Thomas Marsh & Mary ? marriage but a little bit more info. on daughters Sarah's marriage to Richard Tozer, they married in the Parish Church after banns, signed their names, residence Bradford the witnesses were Daniel G Ridge & Mary Martin (x)
details from Somerset, England, Marriage Registers, Bonds and Allegations, 1754-1914

From the census children of Thomas Marsh appear to be have been born Wellington Somerset Ė
I have checked FreeREG for Wellington baptisms and there doesnít appear to be any for

Sarah Marsh 1821 married 1840 Richard Tozer
Elizabeth Marsh 1816 or
Ann Marsh 1811
also checked Somerset, England, Church of England Baptisms, 1813-1914  ???

Who was their four child?

T & M's dau. Ann is noted as single on 1851 census also living with them are
Thomas & Maryís Gd/dauís
Elizíth Marsh age 7 & Sarah Marsh age 14 both noted as born Wellington,
can find no baptism details in Wellington for these two girls either to find out parent/s name/s  ???

No relationships given on the 1841 census could William Marsh born c1833 -
be related to the two girls from 1851 census  :-\

I'm not sure about this census but wondering if they are the same Elizabeth & William Marsh from 1841 census posted above by trish :-\

1881 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q276-DZLX  Elizabeth Marsh 65 Wellington - Aunt

from 1881c as Williamís occupation is different

Hi Ladyhawk, I followed up Willam Marsh c 1833 up also with the same results as you, except I did not have the Marriage Transcript.

I just had a niggling doubt because of age gap between Thomas/Mary and gap in Childrens ages that Mary may be a second Wife.

Trish :)

Hi both, sorry for the late reply! I've been on holiday.

That's such a good find for William and Elizabeth! It seems to makes sense to me. Interesting comments on Mary being a second wife. I do wonder how and why Thomas made his way down from London to Dorset in the first place.

I've just noticed also that none of the children of Thomas Marsh has a daughter called Mary. However, there are two Elizabeths and two Emmas (Emma Tozer and Ada Emma Marsh).
