Monkers Hole in Seavington St Michael
« on: Wednesday 09 November 16 06:07 GMT (UK) »
I would be very grateful for some assistance in understanding what or where Monkers Hole in Seavington St Michael was. In the 1871 Census my great grandmother Clara Brake was living there with her parents and siblings. Does anyone know if this was a street or the name of a house? It sounds very curious :)

Thanks in anticipation.

Lots of other entries on the same page plus next page with same address so would say it was the name of a place.  Not that unusual in small villages etc to just show the name of the place rather than specific addresses

The address immediately before looks like Gunners Castle and the one after Monkers Hole is Lower Barton so it looks like it was in between those two places

A row of cottages called Gummers Castle is still there...on the B3168 just outside the main village towards the turning to Lopen.

Thanks CaroleW and djm297 - very much appreciated. I was actually in Seavington and Lopen in August this year but did not realise the family connection to the places at the time ::). Hopefully I can get back to the UK next year and have a good look around these villages. It certainly brings the family research to life when you know more about the places.

Thanks again for your assistance.

Thank you so much, StanMapstone.
That is really interesting. I realise I still have a lot to learn about using the technology and finding all of these interesting things.
