Did John Austin die?
« on: Wednesday 09 November 16 11:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi, the last sighting I have of John Austin (b.1834 Sedlescombe, Sussex) is the 1861 census (RG9
Piece 394 Folio 172 Page 36) when he is living at 4 Addey Place, Deptford with wife Sarah and only child John Thomas Austin.  He married Sarah Murphy 3 June 1854 at St. Nicholas, Deptford.

By 1871 Sarah is living with John Pritchard as his wife (RG10 Piece 743 Folio 84 Page 24) at 24 Stanley Road, Deptford with young John Thomas Austin and she is still with John Pritchard in 1881 (RG11 Piece 705 Folio 86 Page 21) at 30 Wotton Road North Side, Deptford still with son John Thomas Austin.

I believe Sarah dies 21 November 1881 at 12 Kerry Road, Deptford of cirrhosis of the liver, 2 years.

I cannot find either a marriage for Sarah Murphy/Austin to John Pritchard between 1861 and 1871 and neither can I find an appropriate death for John Austin during this same period of time.

The fact that I can find neither is now leading me to think, after a goodly period of time spent searching, that perhaps neither of these events happened, hence the reason there is no marriage - because there was no death.

However, I can't find John Austin in any census after 1861 either.

Has anybody any advice please.

Regards, Pheno

You could be right that Sarah and Mr Pritchard never married because Mr Austin was still with us.

Did son John Thomas marry in 1882 Elizabeth Mary Gough?  If so he puts father John Thomas Austin boiler maker.  No note that he was deceased (although he may not have known if he was or not)

For info a family tree has death for John Austin the father 1903 Lewisham Kent.

Thanks Milliepede.

Where was John Austin between 1861 and 1901 then I wonder.

Yes that is the correct marriage - I hadn't registered the fact that John Thomas has not stated his father as deceased, although, as you say, there was no requirement to do so.

Is that an Ancestry tree?

It was an ancestry tree yes but the 1903 Lewisham death on there said age 69 and the one on bmd index Dec 1903 is age 73 which doesn't tie in with the age of yours so  :-\

It's funny son puts his father as John Thomas Austin same as himself as father is always plain John isn't he.  Doesn't mean he didn't have a middle name I suppose but you might have expected it to pop up somewhere else.

If as noted he was a boiler maker could he have been on a ship for a lot of those years?

Hi both, have contacted the Ancestry tree owner asking how he has such an exact date of death so will see how he responds.

I suppose it is possible that he could have been on a ship although I have no evidence for that at all.
