Bethesda Cemetery Blaenau Ffestiniog
« on: Wednesday 09 November 16 16:40 GMT (UK) »
I have found grave details (MIs) of John Hughes (died 1.9.1865) and wife Ellin (died 18.4.1871) in the Calvinistic Methodist section of Bethesda Cemetery, Blaenau Ffestiniog.
Does anyone please know if the actual Parish Burial records for these might be available anywhere?
I'm guessing that the ceremony took place over the road at the Calvinistic Chapel.
Thanks

I have no knowledge of Methodist practices in Wales but do have some experience of Methodism in Ireland. In my experience, Methodists don’t keep “parish burial records”. (They tend to operate in circuits rather than parishes but that’s probably not really relevant). The Church of England (and presumably the Church of Wales) do keep burial records but few other denominations do.

Thanks Elwyn.
That's a pity. I have found Ellin's Baptism record at the Chapel and had hoped that there would also be a record of her burial.

Being quite happy to be shot down in flames for my ignorance, I have always understood that parish records are of deaths, not burials, and that details of burial arrangements are to be found in chapel records where appropriate. Perhaps you might find further guidance from members of the Gwynedd Family History Society, to be found on its own website or via Facebook. The helpful staff of Gwynedd Archives is another possible resource. Good luck with your searches.

Yes, thanks hanes teulu.
I should have said on my first post on this that that's what I'd seen, which kicked all this off!
I'd hoped that, having found them, I could find where they were living at the time of their deaths.
'My' Ellen remarried a John Roberts after John Hughes' death in 1865 and just made the 1871 census before her own death. I'm trying to confirm that she was buried in her first husband, John Hughes', grave and their addresses could well have proved that.
Anyway, thanks again to all concerned.

That she died a "Roberts" explains why I couldn't find a death registration for an Ellin Hughes, Jun Qtr, 1871!!

The age, 44, on the headstone and month of birth certainly fit the death registration of Ellen Roberts, June Qtr, FFestiniog, age 43.

Thanks hanes teulu...I don't make it easy do I!?  ???
In my defence, I didn't put that information in initially so as not to complicate matters...in the (mistaken) belief that the records would be available.
From that GRO record, it does look as if she died a 'Roberts', but buried a 'Hughes' though doesn't it?
You can see why I'm so interested in 'proving' the matter. Death certificate might be the only answer I'm afraid.
