New Military Records on fold3 (Ancestry)
« on: Thursday 10 November 16 23:27 GMT (UK) »
The following are currently free on fold3:

UK, Royal Hospital Chelsea Pensioner Soldier Service Records, 1760-1920
WO 96 Royal Hospital Chelsea: Soldiers Service Documents, 1760-1913 Pieces 1278-4287 (various pieces within range)
Presumably the same coverage as that already on findmypast

Ireland, Royal Hospital Kilmainham Pensioner Discharge Documents, 1724-1924
WO 119 Royal Hospital, Kilmainham: Pensioners' Discharge Documents (Certificates of Service), 1757-1849
Presumably the same coverage as that already on findmypast
WO 118 Royal Hospital, Kilmainham: Pension Admission Books, 1704-1922
Not currently included in findmypast's collection

UK, Royal Hospital Chelsea Pensioner Admissions and Discharges, 1715-1925
WO 121 Royal Hospital, Chelsea: Discharge Documents of Pensioners, 1760-1887
Presumably the same coverage as that already on findmypast
WO 116 Royal Hospital, Chelsea: Disability and Royal Artillery Out-Pensions, Admission Books, 1715-1913
Not currently included in findmypast's collection

Ancestry’s copies appear to be taken from microfilm, except WO 118 which are colour photographs.

WO 116/13, 03 February 1808 to 03 March 1812 appears to be missing from Ancestry’s collection, as it is from TNA’s Digital Microfilm collection.

I have premier membership ancestry and cannot access these fold records

Has anyone seen Chelsea pensioner records ?
Do they include mariners seamen from 1810 to 1840 ?

You won't, they are a separate subscription, either Ancestry All Access (Worldwide plus Fold3 and newspapers.com) or a separate Fold3 subscription which works out much cheaper, especially if you can get it discounted.

You would need to set up a Fold3 account to access them while they are free.

And yes there has been a lot of gripe about Ancestry doing this recently, which perhaps would be better aimed at the National Archives for allowing them to do this.

You have not given a name, year and place  of birth or residence, so  I can't help.

You could try a search on Findmypast.

It's because i already have a post about
William Grundy mariner

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=769803.msg6228166

Not sure of his birth date and am just deciding that Sarah and Ann Grundy who listed their father as William a mariner on their wedding certs 1847 and 1850  were probably born to a single mum ....Their father may well have been a mariner called William but not necessarily a Gurney

I don't see how TNA are to blame - they don't set commercial constraints, just allow non-exclusive licences.

FindMyPast have been operating in a similar way for some time - creating new websites to exploit the new data for a year or two before letting FindMyPast subcribers have access (BL Newspapers and the 1939 Register).

Yes but the British Newspaper Archive is a bit different, it is a much larger project and in any case, the records are now viewable on FindMyPast with a bit of a delay, albeit with I accept not as good a search engine and restricted to the level of subscription you have.

The National Archives could have insisted that all their records remain on the main Ancestry site, its not impossible for this to be stipulated in any contract.  Its possible I accept they weren't aware that they would be added to Fold3.  Perhaps going forward they may insist they are added to the main Ancestry site, its in their interest because they are unlikely to receive as many royalties for views on Fold3 as they would on the main site.  Judging by the number of complaints about it, not many people will pay the extra for Fold3 access.
