Horse Guards bequest in Bennett will
« on: Friday 11 November 16 23:24 GMT (UK) »
I've been reading through the will of my ancestor Peter Bennett and found the following interesting bequest left by him to his son John:

"Sixty Pounds of lawful money of Great Britain to buy him into the Horse Guards"

Is there any way I can find out more about this and if John did indeed enter the Horse Guards? Where would I find the relevant records?

Matt

Hi the will was proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury in 1743. The extract I am looking at reads like this

“I give and devise to him [my son John] Sixty pounds of lawful money of Great Britain to buy him into the Horse Guards which I leave entirely to the discretion of my said son William and Barnaby”

Where can I find out more information about whether John entered the Horse Guards?

Matt

Google search?

e.g.
https://www.forces-war-records.co.uk/units/2322/royal-horse-guards/

Unfortunately this website only seems to list soldiers from 1799 onwards. I guess my best bet would be to contact the regimental archives if there is one.
