Great ... thanks.  (Could see other newspaper items coming up for the "Trial of Bro. Wybertus - 1900" ... and a child named as Jone LANE. )

I'll have a good read of these.

Lots of digging to be done (and may need to consult Industrial School records at Archives New Zealand in Wellington ? )
Had no luck in finding the children's mother (not named - but searched on LANE) who was said to have died in Wellington in 1895.

Back later.

Oh many thanks Lu. Yes shame there was no name for his mother.

In this article it says Thomas was an inmate for 6-7 years.

Yes that is sad about Lucy Chiffinch and her husband. They had many children too. I remember looking her up as her death was a few years off Thomas's mother's.

Hi Karen

Would suggest at this stage that you email the St Mary's Parish Archives in Nelson just to see what they can offer.

They hold registers for St. Mary's School, and records /registers for St. Mary's Boys and Girls Orphanages.  [It's not especially clear whether the industrial school is included. ?]

http://nelsonpubliclibraries.co.nz/heritage/bloodline-a-z/st-marys-parish-archives-2/

I'm still happy to look at Archives New Zealand's records - but will wait and see what St. Mary's have to offer first.

Thanks Lu will do that.

I actually found this:

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/HAST19000920.2.8?query=Thomas%20lane

It mentions John Lane (Malloy). Looked up NZ BDM and low and behold there is a John and Thomas Malloy born to a Thomas and Eliza. Just as it says on our Thomas's death cert. The birth dates are a little out but I guess it is something. There is also an Eliza Molloy who died in 1898. Potential mother??? Maybe John and lexy (similar to Lucy) were his adoptive parents??? I am even more confused now.

Anyhow I will email the St Mary's parish.

Thank you for all your help. Will keep you posted.

Karen.

Can you please list all the information on the marriage certificate.

"...My Thomas was a butcher in St Kilda and so was his son."
From the electoral rolls I can see the son described as butcher, but not father Thomas LANE. Where do you see Thomas LANE as a butcher?

1949 - St Kilda West
LANE - Thomas snr. - butcher
LANE - Sarah - h/d
LANE - Stanley - labourer   ... all at 31 Fawkner Street

1931 - St Kilda West ... Thomas LANE snr. council employeeThomas LANE - butcher /
+ LANE - Sarah / Gordon / Muriel Annie  ... 31 Fawkner Street.

   ???

Of course, death of Thomas LANE is supposed to have been in 1944 ?? (if so, would mean that ain't him in 1944.)

1954 - VIC - Isaacs - St Kilda West
LANE - Sarah - h/d
LANE - Stanley - Labourer
LANE - Thomas snr. - butcher    ...  all still at 31 Fawkner Street   ???

.. and confirming that "Muriel Annie LANE" with these LANEs in 1931 at 31 Fawkner Street, was a daughter of Thomas LANE and Sarah SCOTT (born 1910 - VIC- mother's name on index shows as "Saran").

 ???

Q :  So why is Thomas LANE snr. still on a voting roll, 10 years after his supposed death ???

[Note: Haven't really had to check before, but OZ e/rolls don't seem to make provision for "showing names which have been removed from rolls between election years"  ??   ]
