McDowell & Stephen families of Coatbridge and Partick

I have been doing some research on the McDowell family of County Antrim and found a Robert McDowell (wife Agnes Rainey/Rennie) who moved to Coatbridge, Old Monkland about 1880. Roibert died 29 April 1896.

Their eldest daughter Mary (born in County Antrim) married George Stephen in 1893, a police segeant, and moved to Partick where they had at least 4 children - George, Robert McDowell, Alexander (who married Catherine Bryson Thomson in 1921) and Agnes.

Other children born in Old Monkland were Agnes (17 July 1881), Robert (16 Feb 1873), Euphemia (1876), Jane (1879) and James (1889).

I am trying to trace the offspring of this family as so as to prove a link between them and their County Antrim relatives. Do the names above sound familiar to anyone?

Tracing the children forwards will not really prove their connection to your Antrim family as any documentation will just show their parents names which you already know

Robert seniors parents names plus mothers maiden name should be shown on his 1896 death cert which could possibly prove/disprove his connection to the Antrim family you are researching

As son Robert was born in Lanarkshire 1873 - they moved between Mary's birth in 1871 - 1873

Thanks for that! Sorry, I didn't explain myself right. I have traced the McDowell line back to Robert's grandparents in County Antrim where the line stops with his grandfather James's birth about 1792. And yes, the death in 1896 verifies the connection.

I am trying to prove that James McDowell, born about 1792, was the brother of my 3xgreat grandfather William McDowell and by tracing the Coatbridge family down to the present day I hope to find relatives to DNA test and prove the connection. This method has already worked successfully for another brother in the family who was born in 1797 - I have Y-DNA and autosomal DNA conclusive proof. I have tested 5 members of my family (descended from William) and 2 descended through the other brother so if a descendant of James also matches some (or all) of us it proves the connection.

Thanks! The witness must have been Euphemia McDowell, his sister. It was her that he named his daughter after.
