IGI marriage surnames
« on: Monday 14 November 16 02:43 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know if the wife's surname in a marriage index on the IGI is always her surname or is the husbands surname given. I've found a marriage for John Pike to Susanna Pike 15 June 1829
Chagford, Devon, England but on Ancestry there are several trees who have her surname as Gibbings.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Just using the GRO index for the births of their children- it does seem that Susanna's maiden name was PIKE.

Ancestry trees. ::) ::)

FindMyPast have the image of the marriage entry - John is from Kingsteignton.  Both made their mark.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

The 1829 marriage is definitely John Pike/Susanna Pike. Both names confirmed in the Banns document 31/05/1829 - John Pike of Kingsteignton & Susanna Pike of Chagford.

Unless you have a death for Susanna, she may have been widowed and remarried, to account for the Gibbings name, or John Pike could have remarried a Susanna Gibbings.  Bit of a long shot, but I have a similar event on my tree.

Susanna is a widow in 1881, I think John died in 1876.
Haven't found yet whether Susanna remarried.

Thanks to all for the useful information. I need John to be from Bow, Devon, to fit in with my DNA matches tree though. Born about 1803. He's in the 1871 census with wife Susan and daughter Mary Ann their grandaughter age 3 born in Bow. Susanna is on my tree.
