Bywell PRs prior to 1762
« on: Monday 14 November 16 11:24 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to find the birth/baptism of my 5xGtGrandparents Robert Anderson + Elizabeth Johnson. They married 20/5/1776 Bywell St Andrew.

Children:- Ann Nov 1776,  Robert Nov 1778,  Thomas May 1781, Frances Apr 1784, Elizabeth Feb 1786, William Aug 1788 + Richard Oct 1790. Elizabeth died Nov 1790 in Bearl. Robert died 1848 aged 99 (per death cert).
I have found a baptism for Elizabeth in 1759 but the parents John+ Mary don't appear in the list of their children.

Does anyone have access to Bywell St Andrew parish records for the period prior to 1762 (familysearch) also Corbridge + Ovingham to see if there is a baptism for either Robert or Elizabeth between 1750-1762.

Thank you
Judith

There is an 24 Oct 1762 for another Elizabeth Johnson of the Lee with parents James and Elizabeth.

No one named Anderson at all from 1740 to 1765 that I found Bywell St. Andrew.

Did Robert marry again after his wife died?  There is a 1793 marriage to a Jane Smith.  In the baptisms of children from that marriage says that Robert was a native of Bearl.

Thank you Janis.

Robert did marry again - and yes you are right his second wife was Jane Smith. Jane died in 1850 2yrs after Robert also in Bearl. Between his 2 wives he had 13 children.

I had the opportunity to go to Bywell a few years ago - what a lovely Church, with St Peters only a few yards away.

Best wishes
Judith

I looked at other Anderson Marriages in Bywell on FreeREG to see if they may be Siblings of Robert;
Have a look for yourself;
ELIZ Anderson 15 May 1777
JAMES Anderson 23 Apr 1780
ISABEL Anderson 8 July 1787
FRANCES Anderson 9 Dec 1792

Frances was Luke Robsons 2nd Wife
BURIAL;
FRANCES Robson 23 April 1853 age 92 (birth c 1761)
1851 Frances is born c 1762 Hexham

Given that Robert names a Daug Frances she may be a Sister of his.

Trish :)

I had a look at the transcripts for Corbridge and Ovingham today at Woodhorn because they contain a name index so it's easy to find people  ;)

There are a couple of possible Elizabeths in Ovingham - Daughter of John baptised 1746 and daughter of William and Catherine baptised 1753.  No suitable Robert Andersons.

Corbridge contained the baptism mentioned by Janis in reply no. 1 - was it Corbridge you saw this in, Janis, or is it a duplicate of one in St. Andrew's?

Christine

Thank you Trish + Christine

Trish - I think that those mentioned could well be either Robert's siblings or maybe cousins. What a shame none mentioned a father - that would be too easy!!

Christine - parents William + Catherine baptism 1753 is more, I feel, the right date. Robert + Elizabeth do have a son William (3rd son) but no daughter Catherine that I am aware of.
