1880s Military Medical Record
« on: Monday 14 November 16 12:38 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone,

I'm having trouble making sense of my Great-Great-Grandfather's medical history from his short stint in the army.

If anyone could shed some light on the attached document I'd be very grateful.

Thanks in advance  :)

Here goes ...

The top line records his initial vaccinations.  There appears to be three of them; the last one being administered in Galway.
He landed in The Indies on 15 Jan 1884 from the shop Caplorater?
He had bronchitis at Roorkie in Jan 1884. Cold, mild and expectorant (phlegm).
Oct ober '84 he had a stricture of the urethra due to an "injury" which was dilated.(Ouch!!).
In 1885 he suffered palpiations which was then diagnosed as hypertophy pf the heart and was discharged at Netley (large barracks near Portsmouth).

HCM (Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy) is a genetic condition caused by a change or mutation in one or more genes and is passed on through families. Each child of someone with HCM has a 50 per cent chance of inheriting the condition. (Thank you Google).

Bardouleau: London - in memory of my stepmother Annie Rose née Bardouleau who put up with a lot from me.

I read the ship as 'Euphrates'.
Netley had a large military hospital but I do not know the dates.

Just to try to reassure re hypertrophy of the heart --

As Diplodocus has said, HCM is an inherited condition. However, this is a comparatively rare cause of hypertrophy of the heart - there are far commoner causes, such as untreated high blood pressure. Also  bear in mind that rheumatic fever used to be very common and long-term sequelea included damage to the heart valves, which could lead to dilatation and hypertrophy of parts of the heart as well as palpitations. Other infections could cause similar problems.

So please don't worry that cardiac (heart) hypertrophy on a distant ancestor's death certificate might have a sinister implication for your own health!!

Hi, everyone.

Thanks very much for your help with this. Being back home obviously suited him better because he went on to have quite an active life as a traveling hawker and was nearly 60 when he died.

Thanks, Annie65115. That's a relief!!
