Bettingfort/Beltingfort? Cambusnethan
« on: Monday 14 November 16 22:35 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know anything about the place in Cambusnethan Parish referred to in the attachment? It appears to be Bettingfort or Beltingfort, and is taken from an 1827 baptismal OPR. I would like to understand what town(s) it was near to help further my pre-1841 research.  I know that the father of this child had a sibling who had children in Wishaw around this time, and so it was possibly located near there.

Also, does anyone know the exact church location(s) that would be involved for the Cambusnethan OPRs?  My thought is that if I at least knew the church for certain then the family's locale would presumably be in walking distance to it.

This would be Beltingfoot south of Wishawtown along the Whinny Burn.  These are long gone but you can see them on the pre Ordnance maps of Forrest, Ainslie or Thomson.

You might find it useful to read the Statistical Accounts of the parish of Cambusnethan.

See http://stat-acc-scot.edina.ac.uk/sas/sas.asp?action=public

The Second Account is very informative about the state of churches in the parish!

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thank you all for your assistance!  The Forrest map in particular adds so much perspective to this and other research I have been doing.

The word is BENTANEFOOT, it was an area in Cambusnethan parish, it is now part of the town of Wishaw. Probably around the modern-day Alexander Street.

So sorry, my mistake - it should have been BELTANEFOOT.

Thanks for the article on Pinky Williams Sancti, I worked with his best pal Davie Robertson in Speedman's bakehouse, they were both members of Law Wheelers, I met Pinky many times but never knew his real name!
