John Moffat, Annan
« on: Tuesday 15 November 16 07:01 GMT (UK) »

I am trying to find any information on John MOFFAT - Annan.

The only information I have is from his father's James MOFFAT death entry 10 May 1857, Annan. Gives informant, John MOFFAT son  present. His father was a widower, no name given. James was born abt. 1798.

Would like to know John's date of birth - his mother's name and, did John marry. The problem is, there are no BMD for Annan before 1855.

Hi CC ,

Does the 1857 death cert. give an occupation for James Moffat ?

Hi ev

Yes it does - it's not too easy to make out but, I think it says "Shoemaker Foreman".  Perhaps a connection to his father who was a Blacksmith  :-\.

Hi Cupcake

Rene Anderson's booklet of Extracts from Annan Old Parish Church's Kirk Session minute book has two entries for James Moffat, shoemaker of Annan, as the alleged father of an unnamed child. On the first occasion, on 10/11/1818, the mother is Mary Little, daughter of James Little, Howgill Bridge. On the second occasion, on 24/2/1822, the mother is Mary Little, servant to James Ferguson, writer, Annan.

Ian,

Thank you for that information which gives me something to work on. I had thought perhaps John was born around 1818/1820, assuming James was perhaps married around that time. It does mention on James's death details, he was a widower.

Did it give an address for James Moffat and the son John.. there are a few trees with the same death date for James Moffat ...They have a son John Moffat born about 1822 married a Mary Burnie 30/4/1839 Annan ..
This is the address of John Moffat on the 1861 census
Shoemakers Shop Bank Street Annan Dumfrieshire
John Moffat age 41 born about 1820 Annan ( retired currier ) along with his wife Mary and family

Address in 1851 High Street Annan Dumfrieshire
Do these addresses mean anything ?

Hi Rosie,

The address for James MOFFAT 1857 (from death entry) appears to be in Lodgings, Butt Street, Annan.

I have seen somewhere while searching a John Moffat married to a Mary Burnie.

The addresses don't really mean anything, that said, there could be a connection with the Shoemakers Shop, Bank Street, Annan,as James was a shoemaker :-\

The only doubt I have is why did James die in lodgings in 1857 and not with his son and wife.

ADD.  there was no address for John on death entry

Thank you
