Yes a death would give you his parents providing it is the same person only see 2 deaths for a John Moffat in Annan ...1879 ..1 aged 54 and another aged 82

 I was going to look up on Scotland's People but, I find it daunting since they revamped their site - perhaps that's just me. Shall go and and see if I can find a Mary Moffat (Burnie)

Not too sure about the John Moffat deaths  at the moment. The one from isobelw could be feasable .

That tree has his parents as John Moffat and Georgina Little and they have 4 births for a John Moffat the one in 1822 is George /John

Did it mention the parents of James Moffat who died 1857 ? Few tree's with William Moffat and Christian Fraser no mention of a wife ...only one tree with John Moffat married to Mary Burnie

Have you found James in the 1841 /1851 census ?

Rosie - I found quite a few trees for John Moffat and Mary Burnie and some of these show a father James for John, though no information on sources.
