The latter baptism is for sure the one we have
As it says he was born in Northenden, Cheshire.

His parents were James and Elizabeth AND they married in Manchester Cathedral in 1808

Not sure how or why one baptism says Samuel and the other says James as they are both the same baptism for sure. Obviously the transcribing is difficult to do

The image (avalable on Ancestry) for St Wilfred, Northenden:

John son of James (Weaver) and Elizabeth DOWNES of Etchells, born 29 May, baptised 3 July 1814.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Not sure that is the correct baptism.

Marriage entry at the Cathedral - 26 April 1808 - says that James Downes (appears to sign as Downs) is a Cordwainer of the township of Chorlton, and Elizabeth Wroe is a spinster and also from Chorlton.

Added:  Elizabeth makes her mark.

There are no names, signatures or marks for witnesses.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
