Looking for Ellen Goodyer in 1881 and later
« on: Wednesday 16 November 16 14:25 GMT (UK) »
Ellen Goodyer was born in Bury Sussex in 1851 (birth reg Q3 1851, baptism 7 Sep 1851, Bury) daughter of Clement and Mary Goodyer (nee Trevatt). She is on 1861 census age 9 with her parents and siblings in Bury and on 1871 as house maid age 19 in the service of Mildmay family at Dogmersfield Hants.
Then she disappears. The only death of an Ellen Goodyer of right sort of age is in 1945 in Wokingham district but I think she is Ellen, wife of John Goodyer from Swallowfield.
There are three Ellen Goodyer marriages between 1871 and 1881, I've eliminated the 1875 one to David Neville, because that Ellen was born in Swallowfield Berkshire (according to 1881 census) possibly related to the John Goodyer from Swallowfield.
The other two marriages are
Q4 1878 Docking district - possible grooms: John Farrow or Charles Sands (other bride Elizabeth Herring) and
Q1 1876 Alverstoke district - possible grooms: Thomas Drury and David Simpson (other bride Maggie Lamont).
I haven't been able to find any likely combinations for these in 1881.

Can anyone help please?
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)
Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott

Hi
Looks like Thomas Drury was her husband.
In 1891 Ellen Drury, born Bury, Sussex, circa 1852, wife of Thomas, and living in Northampton (Army Barracks). Piece 1199 folio 172 page 3.
For some reason ancestry have indexed her and the children as Griffin.
Youngest child in 1891 was Catherine Drury, 1, born Northampton.
GRO birth index -
March 1890 Northampton 3b 48
Drury, Catherine Mary
mother's maiden surname - Goodyer

John

Thanks ever so much! I just couldn't find her anywhere.

My grandmother (b 1885) lived in south London for part of her childhood and in Bury, Sussex for the other part, had often talked about her aunt Ellen - but she had two - this one was her father's sister and the other was Ellen Fowler who was her mother's sister. I have found Ellen Fowler in Surrey and now I think it was her grandma knew well, not Ellen Goodyer who now it seems moved away from the area my grandmother once lived in.

Thank you that sounds like the other aunt Ellen, I didn't have a middle name for her. The bride should be Charlotte Fowler not Catherine  ???
But that starts another puzzle. Many years ago when I asked my grandmother why she had given  my father and his siblings their names, she said she had an aunt called Frances. I have found that Charlotte and Ellen Fowler had a sister called Frances who appeared as a few weeks old in 1851 and had disappeared by 1861. I assumed that was whom she meant - although she would have never known this Frances if she died before 1861.
But perhaps Ellen Goodyer / Drury was called aunt Ellen and Ellen Frances Fowler was known as aunt Frances in the family, to distinguish between them.

Just seen that Albert Drury (one of Ellen's sons) was born Lower Norwood abt 1880. John Trevatt Goodyer and family were in Lower Norwood at the same time.

Just found marriage record and banns record on Ancestry and Thomas Drury was the other witness.
Odd that Charlotte didn't include her middle name when she signed. my grandmother was always particular to include it when she talked about her.
