Hello

I am trying to learn more about a man I believe to be an ancestor. His name is Richard Shortland and he was born approximately 1823 in Northamptonshire (Weedon).  I believe I have located Richard on the British Army, Worldwide Index 1841 (https://www.findmypast.co.uk/search/results?datasetname=british+army%2c+worldwide+index+1841&firstname=richard&firstname_variants=true&lastname=shortland), including his service number (1456), rank and regiment (51st foot).

I understand Richard traveled to Australia with the 51st regiment in 1841 (I believe the regiment was later re-named the King's Own Yorks Light Infantry) and he remained there, dying in Sydney in 1887.

I would love to learn more about him and further background information about my search can be found at
https://tonilouiseabram.wordpress.com/2018/04/01/richard-shortland-and-eliza-shortland-nee-butts/.

In addition, I have been given a photo that appears at
https://tonilouiseabram.wordpress.com/2018/04/04/unknown-soldiers/
and I would be very interested to know if anyone thinks this could be the 51st regiment.

I look forward to hearing from you.
