An earlier thread on the family may be of use http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=705470.msg5816373#msg5816373

There is a marriage on Anc of a Thomas Sumnals (age 21) to Sarah Jones on 27 Jan 1839 at Madeley Shropshire  Thomas's father is listed as Jonathan Sumnals   In the 1861 census Thomas listed his birthplace as Broseley, Shropshire which matches the census birthplace listed for Ann in the previous thread -so a possible brother of Ann?

Kay

Edit - This looks possible for Thomas's baptism with parents Jonathan and Ann  Jane https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NB6P-4RZ

Thomas in 1841 with family and Jane Sumnall (grandmother??) https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQR5-DC6  On the image Jane is listed as a Lodging House Keeper

Every bit of information helps I think it's the surname that's got me that's why I asked for help with they.

Am I right in thinking Jonathan died before 1851 and Jane died before 1861

Based on FreeBMD Jane died in 1860   but I can't find a death or anything on Jonathan other than his listing as a father at the time of both Ann and Thomas's marriages, so he may have died pre 1841

It is possible Jane Sumnall was Thomas and Ann's grandmother

An interesting article on the Sumnall name and possible variations http://www.surnamedb.com/Surname/Sumnall

Jane could be the mother to Jonathan. If only he was on the census return with a year of birth !

Yes she could have been his mother.  Sad that Jane wasn't living with Thomas in 1851 to confirm the relationship but given the unusual name it does look likely she was his grandmother

I have looked at the National Burial Index for Sumnalls and the only one I can see in Broseley is Harriet Sumnalls who was buried there on 26 Jan 1824 age 14.   Possible sibling of Thomas and Ann :-\

In 1841 is a John Sumnall aged 50 working as a miner at Dawley  to north of Broseley

The age may have been rounded up as it is the 1841 census and I can't see him post 1841 at the moment

It's the surname that has got me and made it hard to trace.

Ie what happened to Johnathan ?

Birth of Johnathan his is mother Jane?

Did Johnathan have more children after from thomas and My Ann.

What's Johnathand occupation in 1841 if that's him and does it match with what his children say on their marriage record ?
