White family, Glendermot cemetery
« on: Monday 21 November 16 01:13 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I am trying to find information relating to the first wife and parents of Thomas White , (c1784-1857) who was a wealthy Catholic merchant in the Waterside, Derry.  In the 1886 will of Dr Barnewall Peter White, his eldest son, he stipulates that the gravestone over the graves of his mother Sarah and his paternal grandparents (I think Peter and Mary Ann) in Glendermott Church Yard be replaced with a granite slab inscribed with their names, ages and dates, with a simple iron railing round it. His mother died before about 1825 and the grandparents were probably also dead before then.
I am not sure exactly which graveyard this refers to, and also if this grave still exists whether the inscriptions would still be legible? I cant find any reference online and as I live in NZ cant actually do a search myself.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

The graveyard may be Old Glendermott , on Glendermott Rd.  If you contact Derry City council graveyard dept they may be able to assist:

Hello,

Given the time period I would be confident that the graveyard in question is Old Glendermott, as suggested by Elwyn.

I am familiar with the graveyard, its located on a small country road, called church road, although the church in question moved closer to the city in the 1800's.

Here's a link to a page with the illegible graves therein

Thank you for your reply. I checked out the link but sadly there were no Whites on it - perhaps the gravestone is too badly weathered and now illegible.

Try St. Mary's, Ardmore, Londonderry.   They have a cemetery attached to the chapel.     Ardmore is in the Parish of Glendermott.

Also known as Ardmore Chapel
