Colour Coding on Family Tree Program
« on: Monday 21 November 16 02:50 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Does anyone know of a family tree program that allows for colour coding of individuals? I'm currently on FTM2014 and can't do this but I want to make a neat and tidy gedcom that can be passed to relatives (as opposed to the sprawling and messy tree that I am actively working on...) and wanted to colour code various individuals- at the moment my categories are "Living Memory" "DNA Matches" "Dodgy Twig" and "Everyone Else" lol

Thanks
Ayashi

A Gedcom file is a simple text file, intended to pass information to software programs - it isn't easy for most people to read? :-\

So, I'm not sure why you would want to colour-code it?

This is what a sample file looks like:
0 HEAD
1 SOUR PAF
2 NAME Personal Ancestral File
2 VERS 5.0
1 DATE 30 NOV 2000
1 GEDC
2 VERS 5.5
2 FORM LINEAGE-LINKED
1 CHAR ANSEL
1 SUBM @U1@
0 @I1@ INDI
1 NAME John /Smith/
1 SEX M
1 FAMS @F1@
0 @I2@ INDI
1 NAME Elizabeth /Stansfield/
1 SEX F
1 FAMS @F1@
0 @I3@ INDI
1 NAME James /Smith/
1 SEX M
1 FAMC @F1@
0 @F1@ FAM
1 HUSB @I1@
1 WIFE @I2@
1 MARR
1 CHIL @I3@
0 @U1@ SUBM

I want to colour code the tree that I can pass along to other people, which I assume would be done in the form of a gedcom  ;D

As far as I know, there's no way to indicate colour-coding within a Gedcom file?
That's down to the individual software programs.
Gedcom records apply only to the data, and not the formatting.

I use RootsMagic, and that comes bundled with RootsMagic-to-Go.
That extra software enables you to create a display-only tree, complete with all formatting?
RM also allows you to colour-code individuals, and sets of people.

I have paternal direct line in 1 colour, paternal grandmother's line in another; maternal line in another, and maternal grandmother's line in a 4th colour!

Ayashi,

I'm wondering is it a Descendant Chart you want colour coded or a Report?

A chart is self explanatory but you have the option of labelling the rows with children, grandchildren etc.

A Report done in NGS Quarterly (Descendant ordered) I find easiest to follow.
It can be exported to RTF (Word Processor Format) & I highlight different lines myself but when sending to relatives I also send a Colour Coded list to say which colour is their direct line.

Annie

Added My use of Word Processor Format is laymen terms for ease of understanding the layout, how it would be presented
South Uist, Inverness-shire, Scotland:- Bowie, Campbell, Cumming, Currie

Ireland:- Cullen, Flannigan (Derry), Donahoe/Donaghue (variants) (Cork), McCrate (Tipperary), Mellon, Tol(l)and (Donegal & Tyrone)

Newcastle-on-Tyne/Durham (Northumberland):- Harrison, Jude, Kemp, Lunn, Mellon, Robson, Stirling

Kettering, Northampton:- MacKinnon

Canada:- Callaghan, Cumming, MacPhee

On Family Tree Maker you have their little profiles and a mini chart above them of about 4 generations of ancestors. I wanted an easy and non messy way of identifying certain categories. Someone suggested putting suffixes on them, like "Joe BLOGGS *" but if I was putting symbols on every person on the tree I'd find that messy to look at.

Perhaps I'm not explaining myself very well. This was something I was thinking about at four in the morning.
