I can see no sign that blaenavon company ever used the Bessemer process, but whether iron, wrought iron or steel the finished product was cast into sand moulds to produce ingots in the casting pit,  suggesting that was where the pitman worked.

I have seen video of Bessemer being tapped into huge ladles on special trucks which were then moved, still molten, to the casting pits a fair distance away, though this was more recent.

If you read my previous link concerning the history of Blaenavon you would see that Thomas & Gilchrist carried out their experiments in eliminating phospherous in steel produced in the bessemer process at Blaenavon iron works, in the bessemer converter there.

A slight discrepancy with the dates but it looks like Blaenavon had a bessemer works by 1880, although Thomas & Glichrist published their paper in 1879.

Could be that he worked in the pit surrounding the bessemer converter that is shown in the photos in my last utube link.
