Hello,

Anyone know if there's an online resource for researching police constables?  Just wondered.

Tim

I don't think that there is a National resource?
You need to know in which force he served.

(Sorry, Rosie99. Crossed posts!)

I know this is an old thread ... but others may have the same question.

If it's a City of London or Metropolitan policeman you're interested in, then bear in mind that the Old Bailey records are now online and searchable. If it's a distinctive name then just search for the name in there, and you'll quickly be able to assemble a set of transcripts of evidence in all the cases at the Old Bailey (which housed the Petty Sessions for Middlesex as well as the Central Criminal Court) in which he was a witness.

In this way I have been able to build a very vivid picture of the career of my great x3 grandfather Robert Packman, who was an officer in the City of London police in the 19th century.
All identified names up to and including my great x5 grandparents: Abbot Andrews Baker Blenc(h)ow Brothers Burrows Chambers Clifton Cornwell Escott Fisher Foster Frost Giddins Groom Hardwick Harris Hart Hayho(e) Herman Holcomb(e) Holmes Hurley King-Spooner Martindale Mason Mitchell Murphy Neves Oakey Packman Palmer Peabody Pearce Pettit(t) Piper Pottenger Pound Purkis Rackliff(e) Richardson Scotford Sherman Sinden Snear Southam Spooner Stephenson Varing Weatherley Webb Whitney Wiles Wright
