Ebenezer HAYLES & parents
« on: Tuesday 22 November 16 08:57 GMT (UK) »
Dear all,
I'd be extremely grateful if anyone could help me find the parents for Ebenezer Hayles, who marries Maria/Mary/Merah Barnett/Bennet in Fowlmere on 23 Oct 1774. Their children are born/baptised in Whittlesford, so I'm guessing Ebenezer and Maria were from that area too? There is a possibility that they were baptists or something else non-conformist.
Any help is welcome!
Thanks!
Lexi.

This doesn't help with the parents of Ebenezer but is a detail you may be interested in if you don't already have it.

In 1815 Ebenezer Hayles of Whittlesford a shoemaker was a defendant at the Cambs Quarter Sessions charged with leaving his wife and four children chargeable to the parish.
He was imprisoned.

No I didn't know that! Brilliant piece of news!

I'll try and find out which four children would still be living at home - the youngest one I have can find would have been in her teens already, and several others are married and have children by 1815.

Interesting stuff!!!

There is a marriage in Fowlmere Cambridge for a James Hayles and an Ann Fordham 20th May 1744, so could possibly be his parents.

These folks are very likely Ebenezer's parents, he calls his only son James and one of his daughters Ann, but I can't find the proof of it!

And that would tie in nicely with the marriage of the possible parents in 1744.

Thoughts here:

So, we already found out that there was a 1744 marriage between James Hayles and Anne Fordham, who could be Ebenezer Hayles's parents. But, as it turns out, Anne's maiden name wasn't Fordham, this was the name of her first husband, whom she married in 1738, called Prime Fordham. Anne's maiden name was actually Brockett. Now, one of Ebenezer's daughters is named Honour Brocket.

What do you think? Is that enough evidence that James and Anne are indeed Ebenezer's parents?
