Thomas Shaw Co. Kerry b. approx. 1829
« on: Tuesday 22 November 16 19:50 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I am hoping someone is able to help me find some information about an ancestor.

From census records, I have traced my tree back to a Thomas Shaw from County Kerry, born around 1829.  His father was also called Thomas Shaw.  The son left Ireland for England on an unknown date, where he married Elizabeth A. Reid, a washerwoman, on 19/6/1848 in Camberwell, and had a daughter Catherine, born 1/7/1849 also in Camberwell, Surrey.  There were 5 other children - Bridget b. 1851, Ellen b. 1853, Elizabeth b. 1855, Daniel b. 1858 and Mary A. b. 1860.  Thomas was listed as a farm labourer living at 3 Nelson Street, Camberwell in the 1851 census.  He seems to have remained in Camberwell as a bricklayers labourer and died before 5th April 1891, aged about 62.  The daughter Catherine, my ancestor, married Thomas Cray in 7/9/1871 in Bethnal Green, had 7 children, and died sadly in 20/05/1899 in the Pancras workhouse.

This is as much as we have managed to find out.  We have been able to find no trace at all of Thomas or his family before he arrived in England as the records are scarce to non-existent online.  I am hoping these details might overlap with information someone here has, who could tell me something more about Thomas' background in Ireland.  I would like to trace whereabouts in Kerry he was born and his family also.  Even a hint of where to look would be incredibly helpful.

Thank you for taking the time to read all this.
Lydia

You could try the RC Registers if they were RC's... BUT with no locations all you can do is click on MAP then Kerry, and go through each Parish.
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

Hi,
As this is an early date and County Kerry records are few on line, the Tithe records are where you may get a pointer.
The only Shaw name in County Kerry was in 1826 in
Baulteens   Kilgarrylander  Kerry and his name was James Shaw.
This may be Thomas's father Thomas's father.
Pure guess work, she says, but a clue.
I had a look in in the registers on line and 1825 to 1835 Baptism's are missing and some marriages.
this is the link
