Sarah Chappell b 1777 in Witham
« on: Friday 25 November 16 14:52 GMT (UK) »
I found it very easy tracing my maternal line through Essex (mainly Leigh-On-Sea and Witham) until the late 1700's and then there just seems to be a big gap in the parish records.

I'm currently trying to trace my 4th Great Aunt Sarah Chappell who was born 07/11/1777 in Witham and christened on 02/01/1778 in St. Nicolas Church, Witham. Her parents were William and Sarah (I don't yet know Sarah's maiden name) and she was the first of their 3 children. I've managed to trace the other two (William b 24/01/1780 in Witham d 1851 in Poplar - almost certainly in the Union Workhouse where he was listed on the 1851 census & Patty b 23/12/1782 Witham d 23/11/1847 Rayleigh) but other than her baptism record I can find nothing else about her.

The only possible/probable lead I've found is that there is a Sarah Woodbridge who appears on the 1851 census in Whitechappel (HO107/ 1545/578 p 18) which says she was born in 1777 in Witham and this is the only Sarah born c1777 in Witham that appears in the whole 1851 census. A Sarah Woodbridge of the same age also appears on the 1841 census ( HO107/ 728/6 /7 p 6 St Sepulchre Without Newgate) but this looks like it says she was born in Middlesex. There is also someone who I presume is her daughter a Caroline Woodbridge b 1821 not in Middlesex. I don't know if the 1841 Sarah is the 1851 Sarah or if either is actually Sarah Chappell.

I cannot find a marriage for a Sarah Chappell to anyone by the name of Woodbridge. Can anyone find a way of verifying if either of these people is actually Sarah Chappell?

Incidentally there is a Sarah Chappell who dies in Witham in August 1862 and was born in 1778 but I'm 99% sure that this is the Sarah Chappell who appears on the 1861 census in Witham and is a window. Therefore her married name is unlikely to still be Chappell.

Hmm. When I was going through all the Witham Parish registers for children born to William and Sarah Chappel (my Sarah Chappells parents) I was frequently also finding children born to a Barnard and Sarah Chappel and I know that Barnard (the husband was a Millwright). So I think this Barnard is probably one of his children.

What makes it confusing is that my Sarah Chappell's brother, William was also a Millwright. That said I've only been able to find him on the 1851 census as a pauper in the Poplar Union Workhouse (listed as a Millwright). I can't find him on the 1841 census and don't know if he married or not but either way he can't be directly related to Barnard.

Many thanks for that. I'll see if that leads anywhere.

Index compiled by the Essex Family History Society.
Settlement Certificates held at the Essex Record Office

Chappel, John + W from Kelvedon to Terling 1736 Ref 134/13/1
Chappell, Barnard + W from Witham to Terling 1752 ref 30/13/1
Chappell, John + W from Hatfield Peveral to Terling 1739 ref 42/13/1
Chappell, William  +W +2 from Ingatestone to Chelmsford 1765 ref 31/13/1
Chapple, John +W & Fath  from Bocking to Terling 1714 ref 268/13/1

Abbreviations The W is for Wife  +2 is the children and Fath is his father
Removals
Chappell, John + W from Barking to Terling 1779 ref 299/13/2

Barnard moved to Terling 1752 so a check of the parish records might prove useful, but maybe too early for the Barnard you are looking for.
Also the Settlement Certificate itself may give a lot more information, some do some don't.

Sarah b1777's mother was Sarah stratfull. Marriage to William at witham, st Nicholas, 6/10/1777 by banns. Witnesses John Chappell and Charles Malyon. Looks like a shotgun wedding!

William born July 18th 1753 witham to Bernard and Isabella Chappell.
