Roberts family
« on: Saturday 26 November 16 05:51 GMT (UK) »
Hello. Got delving into my gr  grandmothers side of  things. Her name was Katharine E Roberts Born likely in Wimbledon, England 1872 approx as I have her christening date I discovered once I found I had the wrong birth year quite a bit more.  :) Her fathers name was Maurice Roberts. He was born in 1841 approx in Denbigh. Once I got looking I realized this appears to be an old family in the region as Flintshire comes up also. His parents names were Robert Roberts and Matilda. Just was curious if anyone may be familiar with them.
She became a nurse and served in Malta as I believe it was a treatment point for returning soldiers from the Boer war. My gr grandfather(William E Higgett) was serving with the Lancashire Fusilliers in Malta at the time.

One of the witness at the 1836 marriage is John Roberts, I think he maybe a brother to Robert.  Other witness are Maurice Roberts, John Bland, Louisa Bland,  Wm? Williams. In the Parish by licence. Both of the parish and bach/spinster.

Not finding the children of Matilda with Mmn Bland on the new GRO index, so unsure if marriage is correct.

Found a possible for Maurice, but no Christian name indexed.

Thank you all for your help. I just came across Maurices birthdate tonight ironically. The family has always been a mystery to a degree. I knew little of my gr grandparents actually. I finally had some luck on them a while back. Where I had made a mistake was to assume a transcription of Chaplain records from Malta were correct as they had listed my gr grandmother Catherine as being 23 when in reality she was 28.  I only recently found where she is buried here in Canada actually. Obviously my gr grandparents went their separate ways. I have a pretty good idea what occurred.

I did not have Matildas maiden name so thank you. I was searching tonight and saw some mention of St Asaph and Bland so I know I am on the right track. I get the initial impression this is an old Welsh family if I am not mistaken. So am quit interested to explore. Thank you again for your help.

With registration so early, maybe they were not registered, lots were not, don't think it was compulsory then.

There is a John Bland in Castle Hill in 1841 b 1771 Scotland, if I remember, dies 1843. This is very near Vale Street and also High Street where other likely sons are in 1841 on census.  If you check familysearch there are bapts and census, seems Johns wife was Margaret nee Hughes. Most bapts address Castle Hill.

https://www.streetcheck.co.uk/postcode/ll163nd

Still unable to connect Matilda on paper to this family, apart from witnesses who are maybe family.

Also Louisa Bland marriage about 1848 which maybe connects to Matilda ?

One to keep on file.
