Does anyone know this place in St Albans ?
« on: Tuesday 29 November 16 16:32 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find out if my maternal grandmother was actually born in St Albans workhouse.....here is the St Albans address on her birth certificate, but am unsure of the name of the "Yard".

It looks like it could be Hert's Yard.....or Kent's Yard.  My grandmother was born in 1875.

I can't seem to find out how to copy her birth certificate on here for you to see.

Looking at the entries for St Albans Workhouse ,and the enumerators route at the beginning of that schedule, on 1881,  it doesn't seem to mention either Herts or Kents or anything similar Yard
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

I don't think you can attach images to a Look Up Board. Can you snip that section of a scanned image & post it on the Deciphering & Recognition Board?

Have you looked at Peter Higginbotham's Workhouse site?

Sometimes it gives the address that was used to disguise the actual place on a certificate.

You are only allowed to post a small portion for deciphering purposes but I believe you can't add attachments on the Request boards (such as the one this thread is on).

Lots of information on St. Albans Workhouse here along with a map which might help-

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

And here's a larger scale map that has street names
http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/sidebyside.cfm#zoom=18&lat=51.7601&lon=-0.3422&layers=168&right=BingHyb

though 'Yards' were often too small to have street names on the OS maps  :(

Hi

Why not post what you know about her?

Name? Parents? Siblings?

Then let some of us try to figure it out?

I've moved this to Herts board so you can post a small snippet of the address box.

Thank you so very much to you all for helping me and also for the "links" that some have posted.  I will most certainly take a look again today.
