ROBINS ALS Whelier/Wheller
« on: Thursday 01 December 16 02:55 GMT (UK) »
Hi
Can anyone help with this one. Robert Robins DOB 1701 approx. This Robert married Joan ? had 4 children that I know of (See previous posts) He died in Buckland St Mary but the only one I have been able to find was in Bruton and he has the ALS Whelier or Wheller after the entry. thought I had it sorted way back but that didn't work out.
Most of the Robins family show up in High Ham and there are also Whelier/Wheller's there.
Just a bit confused with the ALS

Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance for your efforts

Regards Julie

Alias names are a whole topic on their own!
Prevalent in the West of England, but particularly Devon.

See: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/DEV/NamesPersonal/AliasesDiscriminant

Thank you for that information it is very interesting.
So in this case the alias Whelier was used as a deliminator to identify one Robins family from another, is that correct?

That is indeed the main possibility ;D

But there are other reasons, too.
That's why I said it was a whole topic on it's own!

(I see Christmas Smilies are back! :D ;) ;D)

Hello
is there any way I can verify that this Robert Robins als Whelier is the father of William Robins 1724,
Robert 1733, Francis 1737 & Thomas 1729.
This is the one point in my tree that really is a sticking point. Would be absolutely fantastic if we could unstick it.
Many thanks for youefforts in advance

Julie

High Ham isn't included in Ancestry's Somerset Parish Records ::)
And nothing either on FindMyPast.
Somerset OPC doesn't have anything on High Ham.

So it looks as though you need to visit the Somerset Heritage Centre, and check High Ham baptisms?
They hold them from 1569 to 1964.

FreeReg does, however, hold High Ham PR's - but none of the people you mentioned are there?

FreeReg has, for William Robins, c1724:

1721 Minehead
1723 Bathwick
1724 Merriott
1724 Buckland St Mary
1724 Bathwick
1725 Cloford

Couldn't see anything for Robert.

Francis Robins 1737, Buckland St Mary

Thank you for your search much appreciated. I think perhaps they have come from elsewhere to Buckland St Mary.  Bruton - Parish perhaps there are a lot of Robins als Whelier there or is this part of the same Parish?
