James Cameron and wife Isabella Mooney
« on: Thursday 01 December 16 07:09 GMT (UK) »
Did James Cameron and wife Isabella Mooney leave their son Allan and move to England? They cannot be traced at all. Their son Allan b. 1925 in Ireland settled in Ashton-Under-Lyne after the war but did his parents live in the area too?

Most records are subject to a 100 year disclosure rule, so it's hardly a surprise that you can't find them?

Have you tried the 1939 National Register (available on FindMyPast)?
The index is free to search.

Was Allan in the army? If so, was he stationed at the barracks in Ashton?

Did Allan marry? If so, what does it say on his marriage certificate? Does it say if his father is deceased?

Hi,

There is a family tree on Ancestry which suggests -

James Campbell Cameron was born 26 March 1886 and died 26 April 1955 at The Dalmally Hotel, Argyllshire. It says he married Isabella Mooney on 7 June 1916 in Ireland.

Probate for his estate was sealed in London and says -

CAMERON - James Frederick Campbell DSO MC of c/o 162 St Vincent Street, Glasgow died 26 April 1955 at Dalmally Hotel, Dalmally, Argyllshire. Confirmation of Allan Gordon Cameron MC and William Mair Solicitor. Sealed London 8 July

The tree shows his parents as John Cameron and Elen Green.

Isabella Mooney is said to have been born 1893 (parents Daniel Mooney (born 1855) and Jessie Frazer Duthie (1857-1921)  Originally from Scotland they seem to have settled in Ireland and Isabella was one of 5 children.

If you have access to Ancestry you can contact the tree owner for more information.

Hope this helps to point you in the right direction.

Alan

Accuracy health warning. The 'Scotsman' newspaper carried an article on 17 January 1916 about a James Frederick Campbell Cameron of the 11th Argyll and Sutherland Hrs. receiving the Military Cross, this one was described as a twin son of Mr. and Mrs. Allan Gordon Cameron of Letterwalton, Argyllshire.  Also, the grandson of the late Rev. A. G. Cameron of Barcaldine and on his mother's side, the late James Campbell of Jura. So it looks like the one who died in 1955 may be the wrong one.

When was Allan born? The other post says 1921 ???

17th August 1921? Is he the one who died in 2000?

Thanks for the replies.
Alan James Campbell Cameron died 26th July 2000. He was traumatised after returning as a POW, his daughter told me he never spoke about either of his parents. He was a serving paratrooper and was captured in Germany,

I am aware of the Ancestry tree that quotes his fathers death. I would love to believe it was accurate but I have contacted the author MANY times and I have never got a response.

What evidence I have is that on Alan's marriage certificate 27th May 1944 in Stalybridge his father was noted as dead. This could be the fact that he was dead OR maybe Alan was embarrassed that his parents had given him up and it was better that he was noted as being dead. I don't know.

What are your views on a lost parent?
