Wills in Victoria, British Columbia
« on: Thursday 01 December 16 08:15 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know if it is possible to view wills online for British Columbia?

I have a reference for the will of Virginia Mary Courteney SOUTHCOTT and would like to be able to see the will.  She died in 1965 and I have a copy of the death registration which I printed from the link below.

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-62D9-BYQ?mode=g&i=544&cc=1538285

She is actually the widow of Walter England Southcott, don't know where the George came from.

The image details for the will index are on the link below:-

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-89S8-KL4K?i=797&cc=2001882

Virginia is the third one up from the bottom of the page.

Hopefully I have read the reference numbers correctly as:-

Papers - 270/65
Book - A or P: P, Vol: 121, Folio: 107
Wills - Vol: 261, Folio: 73
Remarks - 120551

If anyone can help with how to view the will or obtain a copy I would be most grateful.

I did look at that Aghadowey but it doesn't cover wills for 1965.  It only goes up to 1939 so I need to try and find some other source.

Thanks for giving me the link though.

Contact the British Columbia Archives https://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/bc-archives/visitor-information/order-reproductions/request-quote

I have never ordered copies remotely, but I have visited the archives in person and the were extremely helpful

Hi Mean_genie

Thanks for that link.  Have sent off a request and will await events.  The cost doesn't seem too horrendous, about £12 in uk money.

 :) :) :)

I've had a response from the museum and have been informed that there is a will which is 24 pages long.  Jaw dropped a bit when I read that!   :o

The cost is $30.00 Canadian plus applicable taxes whatever they are.  I have replied requesting what the total amount is to pay before I send any payment.

Well it seems that sending money to Canada is more troublesome than I thought it would be.  I went to my Post Office today to get a Money Gram as apparently this was a safe way to send money.  However it turns out that this is not acceptable to the Museum.   :(

The phoning option is no good to me as I am deaf and use a text phone which means going through a third party.  I can't see how a personal cheque would be any good as I wouldn't have thought it would be cash-able abroad.

The option left is something called a Money Order which they will accept but I can't seem to find out how to get one of these.  If I put money order in the search field on the post office it pops up with postal orders.   :-\

It seems that I shall have to go back to the post office and ask about money orders instead.  Hopefully I can get a refund on the money gram.

I'm beginning to wish I hadn't bothered with this!   :(

a money order is usually issued by a bank and there is usually a charge depending on what bank you use and what type of account you have.

Thanks for that info Cosmac.  I'll have to have a think and decide if I want to carry on with this or not.
