Thanks!

I had found the Dick family in the 1920 census, and that led me, at last, to the 1900 census listing for Archbold, wife Ezaballa (!) and four of their five children in Jersey City. This led me to the marriage of Archibald Scott to Isabella Galbraith in Cambuslang in 1875.

Archibald seems to have made quite a career of lying about his age as well as about his birthplace. Even knowing that, and that they emigrated in 1886, I still cannot find him in the 1881 census :(

Re your OP

Archibald was apparently in Glasgow at 1898 to register the death of his brother?
How did he manage that one?

No idea!

I speculate that maybe he knew his brother was ill (he died of TB) and had gone back to visit him? Though in that case you'd expect there to be a record of his return to New Jersey.

That is one weird passport application.
2) Father named Alexander Scott born in Scotland ( deceased) lived in Saginaw. Michigan from 1854 -1862

Well, that looks like fantasy. As well as Archibald himself, Alexander sired Robert (born 1858), Gavin (born 1860) and Thomas (born 1863) in East Kilbride between those dates, and he was recorded living in East Kilbride with wife and family in the 1861 census.

Why on earth would he lie so consistently about his birthplace?

Good find, Rosie, you are right. Margaret Scott's birth certificate confirms it. Also the 1910 census in New Jersey says that Isabella Dick's and Annie Scott's mother was born in Gigha.

1895 New Jersey State Census ..Jersey City Ward 9
Archibald Scott, Isabella John A Scott, Margaret Scott , Annie Scott , Bella Scott, Archibald Scott ..does not give anymore information ..
So Archibald has travelled back to Scotland between 1895/1898 will have another look on the UK incoming lists
