Certainly is a puzzle, the fact that Arthur claims Young as his father on his army papers and his marriage, that Young says that George and Harold are his sons in 1901, yet in the last census Maggie says there are no children born to that marriage.

I'm fairly sure the children weren't theirs by birth - they were married in 1874, but Arthur wasn't born until 1886, then there is another long gap until George in 1893 and Harold 1894. That plus the fact we can't find birth registrations for any of the children.

Didn't spot that Rosie  :-\

Also edited my post to read Harold  ::)

On Army records is it unusual not to put a surname for next of kin?

I have just looked at 4 random records and only one of them omits the fathers surname. Looks like pot luck.

If it was for me I would be buying that 1885 certificate to see if the mother was one of Young's sisters but we all know how difficult it is to spend other peoples money on a gamble.
