Lyne family
« on: Saturday 03 December 16 10:31 GMT (UK) »
William James Smith (1854 Sherborne - ?), son of James Smith (1821 Nether Compton -?) and Elizabeth ?

WJ Smith married Harriet Cherrie Miles (1866 Christchurch, Hampshire - 1933 Folkestone, Kent) and they had two children while living in Barbados. William Richard Lyne Smith and Mavis Lyne Smith. HC Smith later took the name Lyne as well.

Where does the name Lyne suddenly come from? Is WJ Smith related to the Lyne family of Cornwall / Dorset?

I found an obscure reference to a WJ Smith being not only an employee of the Royal West Indian Mail Steam Company, but a nephew of a member of the Lyne family in Westbourne Park, Paddington. My WJ Smith was Superintendent Royal Mail Service West Indies stationed in Barbados.

Can anyone untangle this?

I have a few occasions in my family tree of a grandmother's maiden name being used as an additional forename.

Also some families, that are closely linked, using each other's surnames as forenames?

Hi
There is one birth of a William James Smith in Sherborne Mar 1854 mother's maiden name Taylor.
The 1861 census does give a James smith 40,Elizabeth 38,Ellen 12,William 7 and boarder Ann  Smith 82  which would fit.
James Smith and Elizabeth Taylor married Sherborne June 1845.
Mary Ann sep 1846
Ellen Dec 1848
boy Mar 1852

completes the family from their marriage until 1861.

There is a William James Smith s of a Mr Smith and Miss Lyne at Stoke Dameral Mar 1852. Sister Elizabeth Mary Lyne Smith Sep 1849 .Marriage that corresponds James smith and Frances Lyne June 1846 Stoke Damerel. That would look more likely.

19.4.1846
James  William Smith bach mariner 64 George St  s of James mariner
Frances Lyne soinster Borough of Plymouth  William Lyne yeoman
wit Amelia and Richard Lyne

Frances d of William and Frances Lyne baptised 29.6.1817 at Rame, Cornwall

Looks like more of a tangle than we first started. I suspect that the Lyne name was added by Harriet's to remember a good friend rather than because it was a family name. I can find no concrete proof of the latter from all the suggestions here. And,  I'm more confused now about who William James Smith's parents were.

Hello
Well if William James Smith was the one born in Sherborn in 1854 to James Smith and Elizabeth Taylor then there is no connection.
If on the other hand if he was born 1852 in Plymouth then his mother Frances Lyne  baptised 29.6.1817 was the younger sister of Richard Lyne of Paddington who was baptised Rame 4.7.1813 .
It seems Westbourne Park was an area in Paddington and Richard is on Westbourne Park Road in 1861 census so would have  been  the Mr Lyne of Westbourne Park and William James Smith would be his nephew.

Do you have any proof of William James Smith place of birth? That or a definate date of birth would be the clincher.
