Old prayer Book
« on: Sunday 04 December 16 13:14 GMT (UK) »
Hi Everyone. I'm hoping someone can help me to trace a name I have found on an old old family book it is a minature Book of Common Prayer the inscription says to Catherine, Matilda Oldham as a token of affection 17th February 1834. I'm not sure if it would have been given as a birth gift of something else so no way to tell her age, and the family have connections in both Irleand and Engand as well, the other names associated with the family are Hill in Ireland and Gibbs, Goldfinch in England I would welcome any suggestions on how to go about researching this lady please and would be very grateful for any help

Just noticed you are new here - welcome to rootschat  :)

Strangely the Staffordshire marriage was also to a Haig (Robert)

He was a Clerk from Armagh, she was from Colton, Staffs. They married in Colton by licence. They were both of full age.  His father was Robert Haig, hers  James Oldham Oldham sorry I can't read the occupations.

There is a marriage allegation in 1855 Staffordshire between a Catherine Matilda Haig of Colton & George Andrew Haig so it looks as though she is possibly the same person.  This would tie in with the parents on the Scottish baptism

Catherine must have come from a middle to upper middle class family & the only person who would have addressed her this way would be too.
Family member, friend or may be a Governess.
The date may be her 21st. birthday.
