Looking for French connections to Sarah Ellen O'Bryan (born 1858)
« on: Sunday 04 December 16 18:21 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
I'm researching my ancestor Sarah Ellen O'Bryan who was born in 1858 in Newcastle upon Tyne. She was married to William Beldon (born 1858) and they had three daughters; Annie b. 1878, Frances b. 1880 and Eva Nathalie (known as Nathalie) b. 1890. I believe that Sarah gave birth to a couple of children in the 1880s who died in infancy. Sarah had two marriages. She later married Robert Simpson Bird.

I'm posting because some years ago, a relative mentioned that either Sarah's mother or grandmother was believed to have been French. However, I've looked into this and I can't find anyone French. Sarah's family seem to be Anglo-Irish. Her father Richard was born in Ireland and her mother Ann / Anna in England.

I'm wondering if I've been tracing the correct family line (the name O'Bryan often appears as O'Brien and even Brien), or perhaps I've overlooked something significant or perhaps my relative was confusing Sarah with someone else. If anyone is researching this line and has found anybody French :D, I'd love to hear.

Many Thanks.

Hi again, I believe when she married Robert Simpson Bird she gives her place of birth as Derwent Villa, which is where the 1861 family are living in Gateshead.

Thank you very much both keyboard86 and Mabel,
I really appreciate both of your time and effort.

They seem to be the Richard O'Brien and Anne Robinson that I've been looking into, which is reassuring, as it seemed to me that Richard was a coachman and a groom prior to that, I believe, born in Ireland. I believe that his father was also in service in Ireland.

The way that the surname O'Bryan changes so much on different documents etc. is very confusing. I didn't know of the connection with James and Elizabeth Parker and family, so thank you for that. It seemed to me that Ann's family were from Yorkshire, but I wasn't certain that I'd got the 'right' Ann. Thank you for telling me about Kirkby Hill. I didn't know this.

Also, Sarah lost more children in infancy than I thought. How unimaginably awful.

It doesn't seem then that there is any sign of French ancestry. Thanks for looking into this keyboard86. Neither of Sarah's mothers-in law were French either. I've checked. It's so baffling, as I'm not sure why this was thought to be the case.

Thank you again.
